More than 20 years ago, Nichia invented white color LED, using a combination of Blue chip and yellow phosper. More than 14 years Lumiled create first 1 Watt high Power LED lamp. From that time on, LED start to appear on lighting industry.
Conventional lamp has its disadvantage of short lifetime, higher maintenance rate and higher polution to the environment. People has been searching desperately for renewal energy and then LED appeared to our eyesight. There has been several other soltuions that people might think could be the next generation of solution like Induction Lamp, Ceramic Lamp, but they were all failed, and only LED Remained.
The first obstacle lies in front is the lighting efficiency. Conventional Metal Halide can have around 80-100 lumen/Watt of initial efficiency. People has been used to work under this efficiency. Initial LED has only an efficiency of 20-40 lumen/Watt, which is not enough for the replacement, low light transfer rate means dramatic high heat created. So it would be really hard to create a high power soltion. Until 11 years ago, when Cree release it's Rebel line, it raise the LED to 80 lumen/Watt, this breakthrough maketh the LED to high power lighting possible.
Almost in 1 year or 2, there start to have 3 technology of LED for illminaitons. COB, SMD, and Lumiled 1 Watt power lamp. These 3 technology each has it's own advantage and disadvantages. COB is good for heat dissipation, but condense quite a lot amount of heat into a smaller package make the heat problem even more intense, plus COS is a simlipied strcture, although with good thermo performance, but extremely fragile from structure. SMD has really good stability and performance, but quite small in power, almost impossible to build up higher power through SMD. Lumiled 1 Watt power, is an old technology and normal in performance.
As the breakthrough of COB technology, there start to have medium power LED lights available in the market, and technology is getting better. more and more company start to apply this soltuion to commerical and industrial illumination. In the year 2009, Ledsmaster Technology build up the first 1000 Watt LED flood lights using COB+lumiled 1Watt technology, plus a professional optic system. This system has change the idea of people that LED light is not suitable for illumilation replacement.
Then the technology has greater breakthrough in the years of 2004, there started to have even better technlogy like Flip Chip LED and Euthetic soldering Technology that turns LED into real Solid state and the size weight and performance start to way way outrun to convetional lights.
