There has been no doubt that LED would become the next generation of Lights, and to reduce the total power cost and saving human being from present potential energy crises. Conventional Flood lights has been using for over 50 years, although it has been improved quite a lot, it's disadvange of lower lifetime, easier broken for maintenance, not enough brightness, are still driven people to search for new lights to replace.
Luckily, we have discovered High Power LED soltions 14 years ago, the first 1 Watt package was made by Lumiled, which is now owned by Philips. At that time, LED is with only 30-40lm/Watt, good in power but low in efficiency. The metal halide at that time can get 70-90lm/Watt. Roughly at 14 years ago, CREE has released it's Rebel series (now as Xlamp series) With Rebel, it has reached 80lm/Watt, which has started the golden time for LED.
Now, commercial LED can reach high upto 180lm/Watt, and labotary LED has arrive more than 200lm/Watt , and this maketh the replacement from normal Flood light to LED quite possible and quite a good sotuion.
The problem is that, most of solution comes only 2-3 years, how can we ensure the labotary 80,000 hours of life time real! We have a testing for LED, LM80, but this test is only for LED itself, not included for the lamp. This test use data of 6000 hours to derive the lifetime and performance of LED. This might be ok, but remember it's only for LED itself, not considering the power supply, the heatsink, and other parts of the LED Flood lights. I personally has been in LED Flood lights industry for 14 years, and have been running high power LED lights solution for 8 years, below are my experiences on factors that can ensure the LEd lights to work for 10 years:
1. Anti-UV material
The biggest enemy for an outdoor lighting is UV, UV can destory a lot of materals. So all materail in this Flood light must be UV proof. This is the 1st priority, otherwise, the light might be ok in working, but the structure or material might be down even long before.
2. High Temperature tolerance.
Most of normal working temperature for a light is 20-30 celsius degree, plus the heat produced by LED itself, the core temperature of a LED lights can reach to as high as 100-150 degree, so it's of vital important that more of material in the core area can undertake that tempetature.
3. LED Thermo performance.
As the core component in the light, the thermo performance of a LED is the decide factors. in test the thermo, the Junction temperature, the heat resistance from juntion to board, the phosper temperature tolerance, are all vital, they should a all keep in good condition and pass the relavent labotary test.
4. Power Supply
As the growing mature of LED technology, LED power supply has been the most fragile part in a lingting system. LED reqiure very stable power supply, thus most of LED apply Switch made power supply to get very clean power with little viberation and little fluctuation and surge. In doing that, most of high end power supply are with quite a lot of compent including the normal capactors. We know that normal capacitors lifetime is limited, and are dierectly realted to it's working condition. So if we want this light to work for 10 years, we need better power supply. A meanwell HLG series power supply is an exaple for that, recent years there are also many other company like Inventronics that can also support high end power supply.
There're still quite many other factors, I will discuss those in details later, you can also leave me a message, I would be really happy to assist you from my past expertise!
